The Awards Committee conducts activities in support of
the NMEA Awards Program, which recognizes outstanding
accomplishments and activities by marine educators.
NMEA Traditional Knowledge Ad Hoc Committee

The Traditional Knowledge (TK) Committee is comprised of
individuals interested in promoting traditional
knowledge as it relates to marine education, science and
ecosystems. The TK Committee is seeking to become
a standing committee, and in the meantime, it has
received a temporary exemption so that non-NMEA members
may be a part of it.
NMEA/NSTA Liaison Committee

The NSTA Liason Committee strives to increase awareness
and appreciation of marine and aquatic education in
formal and non-formal educational settings at all
levels, and the role of NMEA in facilitating that
process. Efforts generally include presentations at NSTA
through a day long track of sessions at the annual
meeting. Share-a-thons are organized at the
regional NSTA conferences as well.
NMEA Ocean Literacy Committee

The Ocean Literacy Committee focuses on the improvement
of ocean literacy in both informal and formal K-16
education. The committee is working to develop a scope
and sequence based on the ocean literacy essential
principles and fundamental concepts. It is also
organizing an outreach plan for promoting ocean literacy
to key stakeholders and decision-makers. At this
meeting, we will distribute the final version of the
Ocean Literacy Scope & Sequence for Grades K-12; discuss
the upcoming NMEA Special Report on Ocean Literacy and
the committee's work on the new edition of Life on an
Ocean Planet; and begin planning for another year of
activities
NMEA Conference Committee

The Conference Committee reviews proposals from NMEA
Chapters for hosting conferences, and makes
recommendations to the board for approval or adjustments
to the proposals before approval. Throughout the
conference planning process, committee members act as
general advisors to conference hosts and works closely
with other committees to ensure that the interests of
all committees, and the NMEA board, are reflected in the
conference planning process.
NMEA Outreach Committee

The Outreach Committee strives to increase awareness and
appreciation of marine and aquatic education in formal
and non-formal educational settings at all levels, and
the role of NMEA in facilitating that process. Efforts
generally include developing projects and materials for
various publics, especially the education community.
NMEA Conservation Committee

The Conservation Committee is comprised of a diverse
group of people from various backgrounds and
disciplines. One thing we all have in common is passion
to conserve the world of water. Our primary objective is
to provide information to NMEA membership and its
audiences.
NMEA History Committee

The NMEA History Committee is dedicated to recording and
archiving (on the History website) the activities of the
organization. We also collaborate with the Awards
Committee to keep the list of Award Recipients current.

NMEA Expanding Audiences Ad Hoc Committee

The Expanding Audience Ad Hoc Committee was formed
during the NMEA Strategic Planning Meeting in July 2007.
The mission of this committee is to create a more
diverse NMEA Membership. During our committee meeting we
will establish a network of committee members and
discuss methods of seeking out and recruiting new
members from under-represented and underserved
populations of educators interested in promoting marine
or aquatic education.
