Exhibitor Reception & Poster Session
Location:  Merrill Hall, Asilomar Conference Grounds
4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Enjoy tasty hors d’oeuvres, drinks and music while you explore environmental and marine inspired products, posters, learning materials and technologies.  Chat with enough exhibitors to submit a "passport" for a prize drawing.  You may end up a lucky winner!  A cash-bar will also be provided.

NMEA Welcome Bonfire
Location:  Asilomar Bonfire Pit
8:30 - 10:00 p.m.
Reconnect with past colleagues or make new connections at this Welcome Bonfire event.  Make s’mores, savor a cup of hot chocolate or just enjoy the sights and sounds of a roaring campfire on a summer night!  Note: Summer nights in Pacific Grove can be chilly.  Be sure to wear layers and don't forget your name tag.

NMEA Buddy Breakfast
Location:  Crocker Dining Hall, Asilomar Conference Grounds
7:15 - 8:30 a.m.
Come meet your new NMEA buddy at 7:15 a.m. in front of Crocker Dining Hall.  Look for the NMEA Buddy Breakfast "reserved" tables.  Discover the ins and outs of the organization while meeting new colleagues and friends!

Evening on your own in Monterey

  • Monterey Farmer’s Market/Fisherman’s Wharf
    4:30 - 9:00 p.m.
    Browse through local produce and crafts at the weekly Monterey Farmer’s Market!  Enjoy a sidewalk dinner from a market food stand or visit one of the many delicious restaurants in downtown Monterey or along Fisherman’s Wharf.  Peruse this Downtown Monterey Map and the list of restaurants within walking distance of the bus drop off.

    The Monterey Maritime Museum and Custom House, located adjacent to the bus drop-off area in downtown Monterey, will both remain open from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30.  For more information, please visit: www.monterey.org/museum/historytour/customhouse.html
     

  • Monterey Bay Evening Cruise
    6:15 - 8:30 p.m.
    Registered Participant Packet
    Take in the spectacular views of Monterey Bay during a special evening cruise!  All participants should check in at the Monterey Whale Watch dock, located at the end of Fisherman’s Wharf, between 6:00 and 6:15 p.m.  The boat will push off at 6:30 p.m. and will return to the dock at 8:30 p.m.
    Participants must be pre-registered for this event and sign a waiver.

Buses will begin to pick up participants at Asilomar Conference Grounds from the Phoebe Hearst Social Hall starting at 4:30 p.m. and will drop off participants behind the Maritime Museum in downtown Monterey.  Buses for transportation back to Asilomar will pick up in Downtown Monterey behind the Maritime Museum starting at 6:00 p.m. with the last buses departing at 9:00 p.m.  If you miss the last bus, you are responsible for your own transportation back to Asilomar.

The Banana Slug String Band

Join us for a night of great entertainment while also supporting NMEA!  Enjoy tasty desserts, a no-host bar and a lively musical performance as you bid on auction items during this Live Auction event, with special guest auctioneers: The Banana Slug String Band!

This band is a group of lovable musicians and educators from the coastal redwoods of Northern California.  The Slugs are "Airy" Larry Graff, Doug "Dirt" Greenfield, "Solar" Steve Van Zandt and "Marine" Mark Nolan.  With vocals, guitars, mandolin, bass, harmonica, banjo and percussion, Slug songs range from rockin' boogies to sensitive ballads; folk songs to reggae and rap.  The Slugs are working on their 11
th CD now, 'Only One Ocean' sponsored by a consortium of Ocean Education organizations around the country.

The Banana Slug String Band is dedicated to fostering positive attitudes about the environment, providing accurate information about natural history and science, promoting music appreciation, building children’s self esteem, honoring creativity, supporting the arts in education and sparking peoples’ joyful sense of wonder.

Share-a-Thon and Snacks

Participate in Sea Faire/Sea Swap and get some cool stuff to take home!  Sea Faire is a potpourri of marine and aquatic education organizations, activities, resources, materials and much more. Or, bring something unique form your area for the Sea Swap -- a special time for sharing, bartering and exchanging items of interest and value to educators.  Join the fun with your colleagues!

Farewell Evening and Desserts at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
with  Gary Bowman & the Tropicana Troubadours
Monterey Bay Aquarium
7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Come celebrate the conclusion of NMEA09 as you take a leisurely, after-hours stroll through the Monterey Bay Aquarium and enjoy the lively music of Gary Bowman & the Tropicana Troubadours.  Observe the nighttime behaviors of marine organisms while enjoying gourmet desserts, an ice cream sundae bar and mingling with friends.  A cash bar with wine, beer, mineral waters, juices and sodas will also be provided.  Be sure to bring your wallets, as the Gift & Bookstore will be open and all NMEA participants will receive 20% off on all merchandise!

Buses will pick up participants at Asilomar from the Phoebe Hearst Social Hall beginning at 6:45 p.m.  The last bus will leave the Aquarium at 10:00 p.m.
If you miss the last bus, you are responsible for your own transportation back to Asilomar.
